Homemade Pinto Beans

Ingredients

  • cup swater
  • 1/2 pound dry pint o beans, sorted and rinsed
  • small onions, quart ered
  • clove sgarlic, crushed
  • teaspoon ham base
  • teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil in a medium pot; add pinto beans, onions, garlic, ham base, and salt. Stir and return to a boil. Cover, turn off heat, and let stand for 1 hour.
  2. Return to a boil; reduce heat and let simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until beans are tender or have reached desired doneness, 40 to 50 minutes.

Tips

For refried beans: Reserve 1/2 cup cooking liquid and either mash beans with a potato masher or process in a food processor until desired consistency, using reserved liquid to adjust as desired.
